Pollination is the process by which pollen is transferred from the anthers to the stigma. It has to occur within the same species if it is to be succesful. If it occurs between two genetically different flowers of the same species it is called 'cross-pollination' whereas if a flower's pollen lands on one of its own stigmas it is termed 'self-pollination'. The above animation demonstrates the cross- pollination of an insect-pollinated flower.
